DESCRIERE

Project’s context

The project was initiated in the context that citizens’ involvement in the decision making process in Romania has been improving in the recent years, but it’s still weak in terms of quality of civic activities and political participation. Economic and political instability lead to a lack of confidence regarding the political institutions’s role in society. This distrust is transmitted to the young people, who instead of acting as a factor of change, so as to improve the political institutions, they reach the same passive attitude towards political sphere and political institutions. Coupled with a low level of information about the organization and functioning of the state through the political institutions, the situation can be dramatic for the overall quality of democracy.

Results

A minimum of 160 students (20-30/class) were the direct beneficiaries of the project. Their teachers taught them basic issues based on the handbook elaborated by Pro Democracy Association with the support of KAS.  By the end of the first semester (due to the end of January 2016), the participants will receive certificats of attendance for the extra-curricular activity High scholars and political institutions.

For the next year, a factor of sustainability would be to start the process of accreditation at the Ministry of Education (which is a long and bureaucratic process that requires separate efforts) so that High scholars and political institutions. A handbook for studying political institutions at high school level  become an optional course available among other optional courses in the curriculum for the school’s decision, for all the high schools in Romania.
