Who we are

Asociatia Pro Democratia (APD) is a non-governmental, non profit and non-party affiliated organization established in 1990. APD currently has 31 clubs in which more that 1000 citizens (members and volunteers) participate in implementing our projects.

What we wish to achieve

The mission of Asociatia Pro Democratia is to strengthen democracy at national and international level by encouraging civic participation. The main fields of interest of APD are: strengthening the relation between the electorate and its elected representatives, observing the correctness of the electoral process, civic education; citizens' participation in the process of public policies drafting, the transparency of public institutions and their control by the civil society; protecting human rights.

What we do

With the help of its volunteers from the 29 counties with APD Clubs, Asociatia Pro Democratia has influenced the change of the provisions regulating the status of domestic observers included in the electoral law. It has also monitored the local, parliamentary and presidential elections since 1992 (both the domestic ones and, since 2004 those from the entire region), it has organized candidate forums (the first ones to be held in Romania), meetings between politicians and interest groups aiming at drafting laws and had held seminars on civic education and participation.

The activity of civic education APD initiates, includes the editing and distribution of informative materials amounting to 100.000 copies per year. One of the most important publications APD edits is The Blue Book of Democracy - a comprehensive directory including data on the Romanian MPs and information on the most important state institutions, as well as an account of the principles of democratic governance. This material was issued in four editions, thus covering the legislatures of 1992-1996, 1996-2000, 2000-2004 and 2004-2008.

APD is involved in programs of civic education and participation at both local and national level, aiming first and foremost at running projects and developing activities that increase the degree of democratic consolidation at the level of communities and of the society as a whole.

What are we'll do next

In the next two years (2010-2012), Asociatia Pro Democratia will try to accomplish the next objectives:

  1. Enhancing the correctness and the administration of the electoral process at a national and international level;
  2. Developing specific instruments for a participative democracy, especially by supporting democratic practices at a micro social level;
  3. Strengthening the depoliticization of the local and central public administration and promoting the good governance;
  4. Promoting national and international coalitions on APD's fields of expertise;
  5. Developing APD's institutional capacity;
  6. Fighting discrimination of any kind, national and international.
